This is the second of five papers I had to write for my Foundations in Educational Administration 736 class.  This was a paper with topic options I could sink my teeth into.  I chose to address Likert’s four management systems in the context of Meridian Middle School as my topic.  Meridian Middle School is a fictional name — at least as far as I’m concerned.  Every school I’ve worked at is a Meridian Middle School, though.

Should anyone actually read this blog, particularly those with whom I work or have worked, don’t take this paper as an indictment.  The thoughts conveyed are merely observations about the reality of adopting change measures in any of the school systems with which I’ve worked.  With that, here it is. Catching Up

Well, so much for blogging about the inauguration.  Despite the fact that we stayed at a beautiful resort (The Marriott Manor Club at Ford’s Colony) the internet connection was spotty to non-existent.  Needless to say, there’s much I’ve wanted to document about our trip to the DC area.

Let me start by saying that Connor and Megan officially quantified this excursion as a trip, not a vacation.  While we had moments to slowly take in the sights and appreciate the history of our country, a good portion of the trip was spent with little sleep, frigid cold temperatures, and overwhelmingly large (but mostly friendly) crowds.  With this in mind, I’ll share our inaugural experiences first and then everything else. Day of Caring

On Monday, January 19, our nation will celebrate the birth and legacy of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.  Many Americans will honor Martin Luther King, Jr. by heeding President-elect Obama’s call for volunteerism in a day of service.  During this day of service more than 11,400 volunteer projects are expected to take place nationwide.  Read More…

The journey has officially started! As stated in an earlier post, I will spend the next two years working toward an administrative degree — Educational Leadership, to be precise.  I am attending the University of Cincinnati’s Educational Leadership online program.  I will be taking two classes per quarter for the next eight quarters; each class five weeks long.  I’m in the midst of my first class Educational Leadership 736, Foundations in Educational Leadership. Planning an Inauguration Itinerary

My wife and I have a very mutual relationship.  We share, fairly well, the bulk of the duties that one would expect a normal family to experience.  There is no necessary rhyme or reason as to why we take on the jobs we do other than interest and skill level.  Barb tends to be the scheduler of events in our house.  She loves the rigidity of a schedule and is quite adept at ensuring that everyone knows exactly where it is they need to be at all times.  We have a calendar hanging in our pantry that Barb meticulously keeps in synch with her own day planner.  I, on the other hand, rely more on quick glances at my daily responsibilities before I dart out the door in the morning.  One might say that I tend to live life as it comes at me.  We often joke about the fact that I will hand Barb the phone, in deference to her, when a friend asks me to schedule something with him or her.  I’m certainly free to live my own life (keeping the family in mind, of course), but it’s just easier to let her do the scheduling.  Read More…

Travelling to DC to Witness History

It’s been quite a while since I’ve had the chance (more accurately, taken the chance) to post an entry.  One topic I’ve pondered for quite some time was that of a trip that my family and several colleagues of mine will embark upon in just nine short days — a trip cross-country to Washington, DC to witness the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States. I’ve hesitated to post about this topic for fear of appearing braggadocios. What, however, is a blog for if I can’t (or don’t) convey the enthusiasm I have for partaking in this historical event; after all, this is an inauguration like not other.
