Boys and Their Toys

Derive from the title of the post what you will – my intentions are pure!  Whether it’s in my blood or wired into my male-ness, there are few things more enjoyable than getting that new gizmo.

I caught wind of this particular piece of hardware about 6 weeks ago when I started running.  I knew the minute I saw it I needed to have one.  I knew that it would enhance my ability to train for the upcoming Seattle Rock N Roll Marathon.  I asked Barb if I could have one for my birthday, but my birthday isn’t until late May; doesn’t do me much good given that the marathon is only a month later. 13.1 Down, 26.2 To Go

Wow, I did it! I don’t know if I’m more amazed that my nearly 42 year old body withstood the torture of 13.1 miles of running or that my mind didn’t succumb to the pain and tired my body was experiencing. Nonetheless, I got through the Mercer Island Half Marathon with only five weeks of training under my belt and it felt good (I know that might sound contradictory given the pain I was in, but, yeah, it did feel good — the accomplishment, that is).

Still Groovin’

Children’s birthday parties, one week apart with their actual birthday sandwiched in between (for those who may not know otherwise, Connor and Megan are twins – born March 10); horseback riding lessons; art lessons; papers to grade; miles to run; books to read; papers to write; cohort member’s forum posts to read and respond to.  Needless to say, I’ve been a bit busy.  I suppose I could have taken a moment here or there to update my quest to get fit again for the scant few who actually read this blog.  Selfishly, however, I’ve taken those spare moments to add circuit training to my daily regimen of things to do.  In addition, I’ve gotten back to mandolin and guitar playing, though I’d have to day the mandolin takes most of my time — it’s newest, after all. My final paper from the first quarter – nice summary of most of what I learned.

Schools are diverse organizations, often times non-linear in nature and loosely structured. Organized into diverse subsystems, each subsystem is defined by the combined personalities, experiences, and expectations of the members of that subsystem. They are driven by standards set forth by the federal government, state offices of instruction, and local mandate. Further responsibility is placed upon the school organization by the lateral relationships it maintains with schools in the greater district organization. Ultimately, as Sergiovanni (2009) states, the responsibility of the school organization is to work collaboratively and collegially toward a common outcome; that of providing students with knowledge and skills to build character and instill virtue (pg. 4). With no measurable end to school reform, teachers and principals are often faced with implementing the latest and greatest strategy in hopes that it will implore teachers and students to improve their practices; these latest and greatest strategies, however, are often void of a vital ingredient – VISION.  As an administrator I will be faced with the challenge of moving a school forward in developing its culture so that students have the best opportunity for success.  While it is vital for the school to craft a vision that will shape its reform efforts, I will be required to have an administrative vision that will guide the reform process.  Key to my administrative vision of creating school-based reform is growing a school-wide vision, creating a community of learners, developing teacher leaders. Staying in My Groove

I don’t know if I’m still traumatized from Monday’s episode of The Bachelor or if it’s just been a lack of time? I actually think my lack of posting has been due to lack of time. I made a gross error in underestimating this week’s assignment for my Ed Admin Foundations II class, thus I got behind. I do have to say, however, that my dear wife bailed me out. What kind of wife would input grades for her husband while he got caught up on his studies? Don’t know how many would actually do it, but mine graciously volunteered her free time to alleviate my significantly high levels of stress. I still have a lot to catch up on, but the reading is actually very easy — should finish it tonight.

Nonetheless, here’s my updated weight loss. Despite my complaints otherwise, I’ve actually made good progress. Heck, if I continue at this pace, I should be down to about 150 pounds by Spring Break. Might be a bit too excessive. Read More…

Finding My Groove Again

Ughhh!  Here I lie in bed updating my blog; updating my blog after a long day at work and the myriad of other responsibilities I had to fulfill before getting “cozy.”  Needless to say, laying here in bed updating my blog is in no, way, shape, or form made any better by the fact that I am having to endure the final episode of The Bachelor — thanks for that,  Barb.  Gawd, this dude’s gutwrenching melodrama is nearly more pathetic than my soon-to-be “getting old” and “feeling out of shape” rant. While I don’t believe my papers are getting redundant, this process is getting redundant.  I’ll have to find some some exceedingly unusual way in which to present these documents — or not.  I enjoy presenting my work, but don’t know if I want the added stress of finding uniqueness in the way I present it.  Oh, well.
