The dream soon becomes reality! The iPhone 3GS.

The iPhone has been around for several years now — well, at least two years. Nonetheless, the excitement over the iPhone and it’s subsequent iterations never subsists. Read More…

Workout – Day 2

Today’s workout was focused on anaerobic capacity. I like to work Tabata Intervals in any chance I get — they’re a great way to increase anaerobic capacity. Tabata Intervals consist of 20 seconds of intense exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest; repeat eight times for a total of 4 minutes. Intense exercise can consist of anything from rope skips, to hitting/kicking the heavy bag, to burpees, and everything in between. If it sounds easy, try them. In fact try several sets of Tabata Intervals with 1 minute of rest in between each 4-minute set.

Today’s workout focused on the following:

Tabata Intervals (Rope Skips)
Clean and Press X 10
Crunches X 35
Burpees X 10
Clean and Press X 10
Crunches X 35
Burpees X 10

Repeat the above set of exercises twice. No rest between exercises or sets.

Time to complete 20 – 25 minutes.

Workout – Day 1

I journal my workouts in a little notebook. It’s cool to look back on the variety of exercises and workouts I’ve done over the past couple of years. I thought I’d move this journal to my blog. While I can’t directly pinpoint a reason for blogging versus journaling, I might best sum this move to the digital realm as keeping my workouts fresh in some way.

Kept it simple today. Here it is.

Cable Pushups x 10
Medicine Ball Squats x 15
Pull-ups x 5
Crunches x 15
Medicine Ball Lunges x 16

I repeated this five times with no rest. Took about 20 minutes. Tomorrow will include more cardio – probably more anaerobic in nature.

Last summer I had the opportunity to take what was probably the most interesting and exciting class of my educational career — Social Justice. We were forced to struggle with many issues that related to the treatement of others — locally, globally, and most important, within the circle of influence that is our school community. During the debate on the variety of social justice issues we were asked to contemplate, religion (and lack thereof) became a centerpiece of discussion as to why we do, or don’t, treat people in equitable manner. Starting Anew

I’ve done what I had hoped not to do — gone months between blog posts. One of my greatest frustrations as the reader of several blogs is to wait for weeks or months to read new posts. While I don’t know if many people read my blog, I do know several do. More important, and I believe I’ve alluded to this before, is the catharsis I get from writing what’s on my mind. Read More…

Background
North Thurston Public Schools (NTPS), the 22nd largest of 296 districts in Washington State, and the largest district in Thurston County, is home to nearly 13,500 students Pre-K through 12th grade. Employing more than 2,000 full- and part-time staff to educate and care for the needs of these children requires a budget of $122 million (2009-2010). In charge of the budget for NTPS is Assistant Superintendent of Budget and Finance, Shawn Lewis, CPA. Read More…

To say that I love blogging is an understatement. It is my catharsis. While I realize only a scant few actually read my blog posts, it is not followership that is important to me. My blog is my conversation with myself about things that I’m not quite sure others would want to talk about — the things I love or that interest me. It is this venue in which I find comfort to say what I won’t otherwise say. It is safe. Read More…

Boys and Their Toys

Derive from the title of the post what you will – my intentions are pure!  Whether it’s in my blood or wired into my male-ness, there are few things more enjoyable than getting that new gizmo.

I caught wind of this particular piece of hardware about 6 weeks ago when I started running.  I knew the minute I saw it I needed to have one.  I knew that it would enhance my ability to train for the upcoming Seattle Rock N Roll Marathon.  I asked Barb if I could have one for my birthday, but my birthday isn’t until late May; doesn’t do me much good given that the marathon is only a month later. 13.1 Down, 26.2 To Go

Wow, I did it! I don’t know if I’m more amazed that my nearly 42 year old body withstood the torture of 13.1 miles of running or that my mind didn’t succumb to the pain and tired my body was experiencing. Nonetheless, I got through the Mercer Island Half Marathon with only five weeks of training under my belt and it felt good (I know that might sound contradictory given the pain I was in, but, yeah, it did feel good — the accomplishment, that is).

Still Groovin’

Children’s birthday parties, one week apart with their actual birthday sandwiched in between (for those who may not know otherwise, Connor and Megan are twins – born March 10); horseback riding lessons; art lessons; papers to grade; miles to run; books to read; papers to write; cohort member’s forum posts to read and respond to.  Needless to say, I’ve been a bit busy.  I suppose I could have taken a moment here or there to update my quest to get fit again for the scant few who actually read this blog.  Selfishly, however, I’ve taken those spare moments to add circuit training to my daily regimen of things to do.  In addition, I’ve gotten back to mandolin and guitar playing, though I’d have to day the mandolin takes most of my time — it’s newest, after all.
